1880 Cairoware (Cairo Ware) Hinged Casket with Mamluk Revival Metalwork Decoration. This is an absolutely beautiful late Victorian Cairoware (see below) metal casket with slightly domed hinged lid and fitted wooden interior. 1880 casket is a lovely example of Mamluk Revival metalwork, incredible craftsmanship laying silver and copper in lovely Arabic patterns and with Arabic writing. Each of the visible surfaces have this highly skilled work of mixed metals applied to the brass base layer.

These were very in vogue during the Arts & Crafts period of Victorian and the subsequent Edwardian periods, very much incorporated into the Art Nouveau era of the early 19. So prized possessions that were then adopted by the West as beautiful examples of skilled artisan metalwork. But the quality is the best you will find of this age and these items are increasing in value as many are going abroad where interest is increasing all the time. Wonderful and functional gift for someone as this item should be continued to be used, as well as admired for its beauty. Although called'Cairoware', these trays were.
