Instead of a shielding gas; protection for the weld pool comes from the electrode cover which melts during the weld. This process forms a protective layer made of a substance known as slag.

The process is complete when this layer is removed and the finished weld revealed beneath. Hawk Tools MMA / ARC welder range are highly versatile and unlike other welding process where a shielding gas is required MMA welders can be used in otherwise adverse conditions such as high winds.
